Storing Water Safely So It Can Be Used Later

Storing drinking water to use later needs to be done correctly to ensure the water is safe to use when you are ready for it. If you are storing a large amount of water, you should consider one of many portable water storage tanks available to hold the water you need.

Storing Drinking Water

There are many reasons to store water in your home or on your property. If a storm comes through and there is no drinking water available, the water you stored could be vital for several weeks to come. Many people that live in areas prone to storms purchase portable water storage tanks and fill them at the beginning of the storm season.

The amount of water you store will depend on the space you have and the number of people using it in an emergency, but there are a handful of tanks available that can hold several hundred gallons of water if needed. While these tanks are considered portable, they are hard to move around when they are full, so you may want to consider something more manageable and use several smaller tanks for your emergency supply.

If you are using the stored water for drinking or bathing, mark the tank with the date you filled it and if it is clean drinking water. Labeling it will help avoid confusion and ensure the water is fresh and safe to use. You may also want to fill the tank with water that is filtered to remove any chemicals or contaminants to help extend the useful life and freshness of the water.

Storing Large Amounts Of Water

If you are considering storing a large volume of water, you can buy or rent tanks that will hold three or four hundred gallons at a time, but once they are full, you need a forklift or small tractor to move them. The tanks are typically made from lightweight polyethylene, so they are manageable when they are empty, but if you are going to move them after filling them, you may want to set them on a flatbed trailer or in a truck bed while they are empty.

Portable water storage tanks for rent are another option to consider if you don't want to buy them. If you only need the tanks for a short time, you could select a tank that works for your situation and have the rental company deliver it.

Once the tank is where you need it, you can fill it with water, and when you no longer need the storage tank, the rental company will pick it up. Be sure to let the rental service know if you need a tank for drinking water or something else. Drinking water tanks can not be used for any other storage purpose to ensure that they are clean and safe when you rent them.
