Scrap Copper Collecting

Copper is a non-ferrous metal that is found in many appliances, lighting components, and household decor. If you would like to collect copper scrap and exchange the metal items for cash, create a workstation that can be used for disassembly and storage purposes.

Ferrous Versus Non-Ferrous Metals

Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron and are not magnetic. Using a magnet when identifying metals can help you determine which parts are made of copper. Bronze is similarly colored to copper but is an alloy that is magnetic. There are also some other non-ferrous metals that you may come across when searching for scrap copper. Aluminum, lead, and zinc are some additional non-ferrous metals. Due to their scarcity, each of these metal types may yield more cash than ferrous metals.

A Workbench Or Table

A workbench or a table and chair setup can be used while examining appliances, wiring assemblies, and other things you have collected that may contain copper pieces. An air compressor and some air tools can be used to remove hardware that is secured to copper pieces.

Basic manual tools, such as screwdrivers, rachets, and pliers, can also be used to disassemble items. Set up a light over the area where you will be working. Plan on collecting scrap metal during the week. On the weekend, tear down all of the items that you have collected. To increase the amount of metal that you acquire, tell your friends and relatives that you are willing to pick up household goods that they no longer need.

Before tearing down an appliance or another item that was originally of value, complete an assessment of the product. If an item that contains copper can be salvaged, you may be better off leaving the copper pieces intact and using the item or reselling it for profit.

Reusable Containers And A Scale

Plastic trash cans can be used to store scrap copper. Purchase a set of cans and designate one for copper components and one for other metals that you come across during the disassembly of appliances or other household goods that contain metal pieces.

The cash amount for a load of copper will be based upon its weight. Purchase a floor scale to help you keep up with how much copper you have accumulated. All of the copper scrap that you take to a recycling center will be melted down and repurposed into other goods.
