Recycling is one way that you can make a positive contribution to the world around you. It reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills while also decreasing the need for new resources. You probably already recycle your bottles and cans, but you may not know that some other common household goods are recyclable. Here are four things you should start recycling today:
1. Batteries
You can recycle most types of batteries. However, you won't be able to set them out with the rest of your municipal recycling. Batteries require a special recycling process, which means you will have to send them to a service that specifically processes batteries. You can either take your used batteries to a battery recycling service in person, or you can mail them in. If you'd like to mail your batteries in to a facility, a battery recycling service can send you a special container to use for the shipping process.
2. Plastic bags
While recycling plants won't accept plastic bags because they're not a type of plastic that can be commercially reused, you can still recycle them in your own home. Save the plastic bags that you take home from the grocery store and keep them clean. Once you put away your groceries, fold the bags and put them back in your car. They will be ready for you to use the next time you go grocery shopping, and they will reduce your overall plastic consumption.
3. Eyeglasses
Your vision prescription changes over time, as a natural part of the aging process. Most people find that they need a new pair of glasses once every two to five years. You may be tempted to throw your glasses in the trash once you're done with them, but they can be recycled. People living in poverty in different parts of the world can benefit from your unwanted eyeglasses. Turn your old eyeglasses into a service that recycles them, and they will be sent to a person who needs them.
4. Electronics
According to Consumer Report, over 44 million tons of electronics are discarded in a single year. These electronics contain harmful chemicals that can leech into the soil, causing all sorts of problems for wildlife and the ecosystem itself. Computers and cell phones eventually need to be replaced, but you can get rid of your old devices in a safe and responsible manner. Take your unwanted electronics to a recycling facility where the usable parts will be re-purposed.
